The Waupaca County Asylum opened in July 1902. The first recorded death at the asylum was Dr John Breed, a physician and Civil War veteran, who died on 30 Dec 1902.
Using a collection of documents, previous lists, and newspaper archives; I compiled a list of most deaths at the asylum between 1902 and 1947. The Waupaca County Asylum’s mission and name changed in 1947.
Asylum residents who died, and whose remains were not claimed by family or friends, were buried in a dedicated lot of Oakwood Cemetery in nearby Weyauwega (the asylum was located in the Town of Royalton). All asylum burials in this lot were included, even those occurring after 1947.
In total 469 deaths were identified.
Exhaustive research attempted to locate the burial locations for all 469 deaths. I was successful for 99% of burials – only foir (4) burial locations remained unknown, and in these cases, the city of burial is known.
My findings were published in “Their Last Respite”.
